When should change be considered progress?
That’s the question we are talking about over the next week and a half as we study developments in European and American politics, technology, and culture in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Guess what?
We can ask the same question about changes that have occurred during our own lives: which recent changes should be considered progress? Who would argue that these changes are bad?

One change that is a progress is changes in technology. This deserves to be a progress because it has helped people over the years and helped things to become very easy. It is positive because it helped to make textiles and helped to process food and also to harvest crops. Someone who wouldn't agree with this opinion could be farmers because they can be replaced by machines. People in the auto industry could lose jobs and robots can take over.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that is a negative light would be television. I think television should be changed because kids and other people could try it like insane stunts and people could get hurt or injured. People who would oppose this would be t.v networks that have the shows.

One change that should be considered progress is the phone. The phone lets more and more people communicate faster and easier. Instead of having to send a letter or go find someone to talk to them you can simply dial their number in the phone and talk to them. Some people could say that it's bad because there's less direct human interaction and that it shouldn't be a substitute for real contact, but it's not. People still meet up and talk once in a while, it's just that the phone lets them do it more easily.
ReplyDeleteOne negative thing is the atomic bomb. It allows for mass killing in times of war. The atomic bomb kills indiscriminately. Unless a remote military base with no civilians is being bombed, there's no way to use it without harming civilians. Yes, it can end a war, but that's a big price to pay in civilian deaths.
Technology is a major progress! Back way back when, people couldn't do anything. NO television, cell phones, internet, home appliances or even washer and dryers! That had to of been a horrible life style. I bet people spent all their time cleaning! HOW BORING! Our technology is makes our lives allot easier. Like no hand washing clothes or dishes, we have easy communication with cell phones and social networks. We can stay busy watching television and playing video games. And my favorite block out parents with the ipod blasting in your ears. On the other hand people may think advanced technology is bad because we seem lazier, since everything is machine based, we don't have to do much. But if you think about getting all the boring things out of the way we can get out and chill with friends. Like long walks on the park. :)
ReplyDeleteFast food restaurants are a negative affect on ALL American citizens! Its great but not when your gaining a few extra pounds from it. Honestly its convent but simply fattening. Others may disagree because once they see that their gaining weight it might encourage them to want to work out more.
I think that Technology is a huge positive change to be considered progress. Technology has come so far. For example, the cell phone use to be some huge device with an antenna and with a carry case for it, now the cell phone is like a mini computer. Cell phones now are touch screen; you can go on the internet and ex. They have changed so much. The technology today makes our lives easier and more efficient. We use it everyday.
ReplyDeleteGuns/weapons should be viewed in a negative light because why create something to kill…it’s a sin. I understand that we need them to protect and we use them for hobby. Some people just don’t use them for good. There have been many people killed by guns when they didn’t do anything wrong.

One change that I would consider to be progress would be the changes in technology. The changes in technology can help us in more way than one. It can help us with directions, or with homework, and in even better ways it can help us in medical ways. The majority of us have taken to the changes in technology very well and are up to date on how to work all of it and so on, those who have trouble working the fast changing technology might oppose to it.
ReplyDeleteHow we treat our minority groups could be viewed as bad. I say this because we are the United States and we are all "equal," but many of us are still being discriminated against. We always talk about how we should treat others the way we are treated and we are taught in school about racism, but we haven't really made any positive changes recently. We make it almost impossible to be a legal citizen and even when they are legal some are often questioned and possibly sent back anyways. This could cause some families to live here illegally. So if we are all supposed to be equal, shouldn't we change the way we do things, and how we treat others? Some who have made it in higher government places might say that we have made a positive change, and we have. I just believe that we are capable of more, and aren't doing enough to do so.

One change that i think is progress is the changes in how women are treated. One change is the way women have been treated is having women able to vote now and to have a voice of there own. A long time ago women weren't allowed to vote at all. Today we had a women running for president Hilary Clinton, even though she didn't become the president she became the secretary of the United States. Another positive change would be the jobs women have these days. Women are now bosses of companies and in the army. When people say they could see this as a negative change i can see where there coming from. This change can become a negative because women shouldn't have the right the vote because there voice doesn't matter and women shouldn't be bosses of companies and in the army because that is a man's job.
ReplyDeleteOne change i think that has become a negative light is the changes in television. One change that i think has changed television is how suggestive it is today. A long time ago around the 1950's when Elvis was still alive, he did one of his dances on television and everyone thought it was very suggestive. Now these days all shows are very suggestive even with PG shows. Some kids have caughy on to this and some kids can't. But when they do or an adult does it makes some adults embarrassed.This is a bad change because it it affects kids and teenagers to. Just because people do things on television doesn't mean they should do these things in real life. It's to a point where it has made our country worst and have made statics. People may say this is a good change because of the way it teaches kids at a young age what these thing are.

One change that has beome good is how minorities are treated a while back. African Americans could not vote. Go even further back and they were slaves. Today African americans are all over the place, There is very little segregation in the United States. African Americans can now own property back then they couldn't. Oprah Whinfrey is a millionare and she is an African american WOMAN. Oprah had a terrible background. She was poor and taking care of her 6 or 7 siblings. Yes the way minorites sre being treated has changed alot over the years and it's for the best.

You hardly ever hear a male rapping about how he has a great woman behind. you always hear how he has 7 or 8 b's or h's hanging on his arm ready to do whatever he says. that was one change i noticed back in the day it was men singing about women being beautiful and respecting them in their songs.That is one change that went for the worse.

ReplyDeleteOne change that i think is harmful is the music teens are listening to. There is more slandering women. There is no respect for women in todays rap music. You always hear about how a man has 7/8 shorties on his arm willing to do anything he commands. You very rarley hear a guy rapping about how he has a great woman by his side. Back in the day they use to sing about how beautiful and caring women were back then women were respected. That is one change that i think has become negative.

One change I consider progress would be changes in how women are treated. Women now have the right to vote. They are also aloud to have jobs that were back in the day consider only a mans job. Also they get paid and treated the same at work. Someone who might oppose it is a sexist, and they might think its negative well because they're sexist.
ReplyDeleteOne change I think that is negative is change in music such as rap. It diminishes women. Also it shows how people abuse drugs. Some songs also say things about supporting gangs. Whoever listens to that type of music might think that its positive and its just freedom of expression.

One change that I think should be considered progress would be how women are treated. This change deserves to be considered progress because in the 1800's, and some of the 1900's, women were typically expected to stay at home and clean and tend to the family at home. If women tried to get any more power or responsibility than this expectation they were not allowed to, and were looked down on by men and leaders. While nowadays, we have women making even more money than men, and in politics too. I think that men from these times would disagree with this as progress because they were the ones preventing them from exceeding back in that time.
One change that I think should be viewed in negative light would be the majority of whites view on minorities. Many whites still discriminate minorities, the U.S. has tried to lessen the effect of this by doing things like requiring organizations to hired a minority over a Caucasian. They believe that they must set standards like this because they can not stop de facto segregation. I think that everyone should view the minorities and equal people, such as themselves.
One change in technology that should be considered progress is the increase in computer efficiency. This change deserves to be considered progress because it helped to do alot of things such as: make education easier, make things move faster, etc.. People that are older, that lived through tough times, might think that this a negative change because people these days are starting to rely too much on technolgy to do simple things that they, back in their day, used to do by hand, or on foot, or whatever the case.

It has impacted many people and many things in a bad way such as: violence, drug use, homosexuality,etc. People that are influenced by the music might think that it is a positive change because since they have been listening to it their life seems better. However, this is just the music speaking for them. Their lives may not really be better; this is just what they believe.

One change that would be considered progress would be the change in technology because of the extreme changes it has been through.. From huge pocket gaping phones to pocket computers! Whether the change was big or small, it was progress. In a sense cell phones, computers, the internet, is all considered technology. All of it is positive to a certain extent because it changes the way everyone lives their lives. Paying bills online, keeping in contact at all times, or even just buying clothes over the internet. Then again, their are also people who believe that the progress in technology has taken a turn for the worse.. made the life we live today too easy, made things different. The way we communicate, operate, and get around are changing as we know it. The people that were around for the simpler days, lived in a simpler, and more peaceful time.
ReplyDeleteTelevision has simply changed the way things are viewed everywhere. That would be one negative thing of today. People rely only on that for entertainment while they sit around eating and watching TV as a lifestyle. It's an unhealthy way of life which is leading America into an even more obese population. The change of people watching it more has led to bigger health problems due to the lack of exercise because "someones show is on". People that either created TV or people that live the lifestyle I described would completely disagree with me because they are insecure and just KNOW I'm right because they are sitting around getting fat :)

i think changes that should be considered progress is the change in our government and changes towards hw minority groups are treated. The change in our government should be considerded a major change because minorities used to always be looked down upon and were never taken seriously. Whats psitive about this change is that we finally have an African American President in office today.

The changes in the American culture should be considered negitive because so many people are feeling content with the situation their in that their not working to the best of their ability. So many people feel that things are just going to happen to them and they don't have to do anything to make it happen. Someone who might view the American Culture as a positive change are the people who are working hard and making something of theirselve and they would argue that the American Culture is fine because since they have made something of themselve that they feel intitled to do whatever they feel they want to.

ReplyDeleteI think a positive change in history would be the modernization of the several types of technology that we have for our use now a days. I believe it should be considered progress because it has helped people throughout history do things with such ease as apposed to earlier years where everything required strict manual labor. The people who might try and oppose modern technology might be: people who believe in traditional ways of labor or getting things done, or the people who simply can't afford any new advancements in technology.
ReplyDeleteI believe the major advancement in weaponry over the years should be considered in a negative light. I think it should be considered in a negative light because all the new weapons are used for would be to kill others, used for taking over countries, and for self leisure which is really kinda pointless. whats bad about it is that with all these new advancements, everyone wants to get their hands on them and they will do anything to get them. One change that should be considered progress is technology. Technology has helped find new cures, faster ways to get around to places, and made jobs easier. Technology is positive because it had made life easier. Some people may disagree, by saying that new technology cost too much money, or some new technologies aren't really necessary.
ReplyDeleteOne change that should be considered negative is music. Some music talks about negative things and can encourage younger kids that listen to it, to do those things. Music can sometimes send the wrong messages to people who are easily enfluenced. Parents might also think that music can be a negative effect on their children. Parents could be concerned that their kids could be getting involved in things that the songs talk about,like drugs or alcohol.

Change in technology has become a major progress in the world today. Back during the 1800's there was nothing but simple man made labor; there was no such thing as phones and cell phones let alone refrigerators. I can consider this progress because now people can live farther away from work because technology has created cars and better houses. The positive outcome that comes out of this is it makes human life easier for labor and it is more efficient. In my opinion people the government would consider this a negative effect because of the technology that is here now and there are hackers and thieves who use high tech technology to do their crime.
ReplyDeleteI would say change in fashion should be considered a negative change because of the fact there are people who go above and beyond showing a lot of skin and wearing to high of skirts and just dressing nasty. It is bad because everyone doesn’t want to see that kind of stuff that leads people to get rapped and harmed in ways they don’t want to be harmed. The people dressing like that and rapist would consider this a good thing because of the fact they can take advantage of the person dressing like that.
I think that the change in new technology could be considered a change of progression. New technology is helpful, convenient and could ultimately save someone's life. New technology like the cell phone, or the on-star systems put in newer cars, could be the one way someone could get help if they ever got in a situation when they needed it most. Some people, like parents, might see new technology as a bad thing. The cell phone and computer do take up most of your average teenager's time. Depsite the fact that technology could be a downfall when used against teens, it has a lot of upsides and has created a world some people would have never of imagined.

A lot of the music of the rap genre talks about killing people and drugs and being in gangs and that could influence young kids and make them think those things are okay. A lot of rap stars have lived a dangeroud life and a lot of the things they rap about are true, but a lot of parents would not approve of their children listening to that kind of stuff. Other rap stars and people affiliated in gangs and such, might see these rap songs as a good thing because they're speaking the truth and telling people what they have gone through. Even though these raps are true, they still give young children the wrong impression of life and could be the cause of teens doing the things they hear about in these songs.

I think that a change in progress would be the the new technology now a days. Such as the cell phone that keeps your family & others in touch with you- it's a way of safety, the technology used in hospitals used to find cures, and other technologies that makes things easier for people and almost all workers. A negative change, I see viewed as television today. The language & profanity used in reality shows, and even cartoons for kids. Others who hear and like to watch that kind of language & profanity involved in these shows, would disagree. But I feel that this change, shows a negative light of television that kids from all ages come across and actually enjoy watching?

One change that should be considered progress is the advance in medicine. I think it deserves to be considered progress because it allows us to cure and save countless innocent lives. For example, there could be a toddler with leukemia. We now have treatments that can help expand the life of this child. Some people might consider this a negative effect because the treatments do not always work and some medicines have an adverse reaction on the patient. However, the chances of that are very slim.
ReplyDeleteOne change that I think should be viewed as a negative impact on society is health care. Some people might say it's good for society because you won't have to pay for it. However, it has a double edge. First of all, you HAVE to use it. It's not optional. Also there have been reports of people from countries such as canada where people have died waiting in line for organ transplants because there is a higher demand for organs when there is free health care than there is when it's free. Another reason, is that people have started to going to the doctor for rediculous things such as a runny nose or a minor sore throat. This causes back ups in the clinics and makes people who have serious issues wait for health care. One final reason is that the government takes over health care. This causes private owned health care units to go out of business forcing citizens to use the government controlled health care, creating a monopoly.
